About Rutt
Rutt is a business settled in Brazil focused on transporting passengers and parcels through alternative lines. Rutt is an application that facilitates the pick up and delivery of passengers without having to go through bus stations.
The challenge
The application is now available on Android and iOS platforms for the final consumer, the passenger. At this point, Rutt needed to move forward with the version for the driver, that is, people who have vans authorized to transport passengers.
The application needed to have features that could make the driver’s life easier, as his day-to-day challenges were many:
- Receive the passenger’s request and schedule its picked up, at a specific location;
- Identify whether the seats for the day of travel were full;
- Monitor the pick up of passengers without running the risk of forgetting any;
- Direct and handle a notebook or clipboard with your notes and reservation notes;
- Accommodating passengers’ bags in the car;
- Among others.
Main goal
Delivering ease and agility to Rutt’s drivers, enabling the quick and safe pickup of passengers, avoiding the use of spreadsheets, clipboards and other means that stress the work.
Thinking about how to solve the problem
To help us understand the following subjectivity that brings to understand the problem, indicated the use of the Matrix CSD as follows:

Facilitating decision making
To help us understand the subjectivity of what we can extract from the problem, we made use of the Matrix CSD, as indicated below:
The first step in the design process was to understand the important limitations we would have to face in order to deliver a solution. And we almost didn’t go into shock! The reality was that:
- The time to run was very short, about 3 months.
- The software behind the application was almost finished.
How could we solve the problem?
Based on these ideas, we decided to do a braisntorming to list which features could be part of this version of the application:
- Map of regions served
seat selection.
- Booking registration in less than 5 clicks.
- Viewing payments for reservations.
- Vehicles with a map of free and occupied seats.
- Travel calendar.
Persona
Rivaldo Siqueira, 48 years old, is married to Simone and has 3 children: João (18 years old), Pedro (14 years old) and Maria Clara (12 years old). He studied until high school when he learned to drive, inspired by his father, Francisco Inácio, who was a bus driver for many years.
15 years ago Rivaldo financed a van and started to travel between the cities of Caicó and Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte/Brazil.
The advantage that Rivaldo offers its passengers is, in addition to being cheaper than the buses of large companies, is that it picks up the passenger at their home and leaves them n=where they want at their destination.
The day-to-day is very busy. Leaving home at 10 am, he starts picking up his passengers and leaves for Natal at noon, arriving at his destination around 4:30 pm. When he arrives in the city of Natal, Rivaldo begins to take his clients to their previously agreed destinations. This phase of work lasts until approximately 8 pm, when he cleans the van and then he can rest, because the next day he starts picking up passengers at 5 am, with the destination back to the city of Caicó city.
Generally, Rivaldo’s income is around R$ 10,000.00 per month.
When he has leisure time, he likes to take the family to the club, have a beer and chat with friends.
And when he’s not doing anything, he watches adventure and comedy movies. His favourite is The Liar, with Jim Carey. His favorite musical style is forró.

Conclusions
The Rutt app is a very relevant solution for simple people who are looking for fast, comfortable and cheap transport between the countryside and the capital.
In addition, it helps independent drivers, duly legalized, to increase not only their income but, above all, the quality of their service, simplifying their day-to-day work.
